Nightly Image: Piazza di Spagna, Rome

Shaped like a crooked bow tie and surrounded by tall, shuttered houses painted in muted shades of ocer, cream and russet, The Spanish Steps, are usually crowded day and night. It is the most famous square in Rome and has been the haunt of foreign visitors, dignitaries and expatriates. Surprisingly, the rainy Sunday morning when this was shot the steps were empty of the crowds. Return visits showed huge crowds up and down the steps – very mysterious!
